Do you know how to TANGO?

Have you heard that the color of the year is Tango Tangerine?

Erin at Two More Seconds Blog is hosting a challenge called The Tangerine Tango Quilt Challenge. There's 2 categories; mini quilts and large quilts. She set up a flickr page called the Tango Tangerine Contest that you can join to enter and see everyone's entries.
She has challenged us to create a quilt using mostly tango tangerine colors. You can use 1 other color and a neutral if you want, but the focus color has to be in the orange family (as close to tangerine as possible).

Imagine how lucky I felt when I realized that the fabric my son Tyler picked was orange and its pretty close to tangerine. What a perfect match! I can enter the contest, make Tyler his long waited for quilt and cross off 1 of my goals for the Finish-a-long (see yesterdays blog post). It's like a banana split ice cream sundae!!!

Here's the fabric Tyler chose. My plan is to work on this quilt till it's done. He goes back to school at the end of January. Thank you Johns Hopkins for starting the spring semester late :) I love that he gets a long break. He goes to school so far away that it's nice to have longer than a few days with him. He will be taking this quilt back with him to keep him warm during the cold winter.

I have a new pattern that he helped me design too. I will have that pattern available by the end of the month (hopefully).

So how about it...will you tango with me?

What a week so far!

Well I am finally home!

Where did I got you ask?

As you might know on Thanksgiving night I had to be rushed my ambulance to the ER (no I didn't eat too much at dinner). I felt like I was having a heart attack, which was thankfully ruled out within 10 minutes of arriving. Then after a few more tests they said I had gallstones and would need them out. I have no idea why they didn't do that immediately, but maybe the holiday made then short staffed people (I am choosing not to dwell on that).

So I toughed it out over the weekend waiting patiently till Monday morning to call the surgeon I used for my hernia a few years ago. I was so upset that he couldn't fit me in this week and mostly likely not even the next week. So he sent me to the ER and said he would call down there to explain the situation. I had the best staff in the ER and after they took another ex ray and sonogram they called in a surgeon. The surgeon did an exam and asked me tons of questions and said that I would be having the gallbladder out right away. Within an hour I was in the OR. Whoever said its an easy surgery and a quick was wrong. I was out for almost 2 hours and although I had the 4 little scars, 3 are about 1 " and the 4th (by the belly button) is almost 3". Evidently it was abnormal and harder to get out. But what about me is ever 'normal'? That was all on Monday so I should have been able to go home early Tuesday morning, since its usually a day operation.

Tuesday brought its own problems, my Blood Oxygen was in the 70s so I had to wear a full mask all the time. It was getting harder for me to breathe. Then the doctor did some gross thing, he stuck a tube down my nose into my my lung or stomache area to relieve the pocket of whatever gasses and goo was there. This finally helped me breathe. Plus they kept me pretty drugged up last night since I couldn't sleep at all the night before.
I woke up today and by 10:00 the doctor had been in and said I could go home! All I remember is trying to call Tim and falling asleep before he answered, but I guess he got the hint anyway.
So that's my story of this week so far.

Plus its also my son Eric's birthday. We had 1 week with him before he was taken from us, but I have to believe that Eric was in heaven watching over me and helped make me better. Its almost like I could feel him with me. As a matter of fact in one of my dreams last night I was hugging him, which to me was a wonderful gift from him.

My Craizee Kids

How was your Thanksgiving? Ours was nice, quiet as usual, which is how I like it. We have quality family time, and with the kids out on their own or in college these days are way to few and far between. After the meal I rounded the kids up and took a few pics. My kids are such goofballs, they all love getting their pics taken. Here's a nice pic of them (Tyler, Meagan and Bryan)

Here's them getting a bit Craizee

The last pic was followed by my real Muscle Men coming out!

So that was the fun portion of Thanksgiving. The not fun part came at night when I had to be rushed by ambulance to the ER. I thought I was having a heart attack! I am a first aid and CPR teacher and know the warning signs very well. Luckily they ruled out a heart attack and sent me for a sonogram to see my gallbladder. Ends up that I have several gallstones and need my gallbladder removed. Its been a hard weekend dealing with the pain, it figures this would happen to me on a long weekend where the doctors don't have office hours. Tomorrow morning I will be calling the surgeon and my family doctor to get this taken care of.

So if you don't see me for a while you will know why.
I wish you and yours a happy and healthy holiday season and new years!

The Reptile Quilt For My Reptile Man

Have any of your kids ever become so enthralled by something that it's all they ever talk about. My oldest son, Bryan, was like that in 3rd grade. I was nuts for snakes, lizards, snakes, frogs and did I mention snakes? You get the jist of it right? All he talked about were these animals, every report for school was done on snakes or lizards, which he then read on the loudspeaker at the school. I spent many afternoons in the herpertarium with him so he could see the snakes they had there.

So when I saw Meadow Friends by Deb Strain I knew that I had to make Bryan a quilt with it. I used the Boy Jelly Roll for the Key to Friendship Quilt Along. Earlier this week I basted, quilted and bound it so I had it to give Bryan when he came home for Thanksgiving.

I had no trouble figuring out how to quilt this...it spoke to me right away. I quilted around the key part of each block. I just had no idea how difficult it would be to do the quilting that way. I was turning the quilt every 2" - 5". Here's a closeup of the back to show you the quilting.

And Bryan loved it! As a matter of fact Tyler liked it too, I guess I forgot how much he loved frogs when he was younger. I have a big quilt planned for Tyler so he will not be forgotten :)

Here's a pic of Bryan snuggling with the quilt a few minutes ago.

Thanksgiving snack

Happy Turkey Day!

This year is the first year one of our kids isn't in college, our oldest, Bryan, is a working man now so he doesn't have the long weekend off from school. So our plans are a little different this year since he won't get here till between 5:00 - 6:00, which means dinner will be later than normal.

When we used to have Thanksgiving at my MILs, her husband Santo used to make a huge antipasto platter for later in the evening for us to munch on. I decided to keep that tradition alive, but a lil twist. I made it at noon  as a snack and the family demolished it!

Whats on the antipasto platter? Usually meats such as different salamis and dried ham and a few different cheeses. Plus lettuce, tomatoes, olives, roasted bell peppers, artichoke hearts, peppercinos and anything else you want to include. And a few different oil and vinegars to choose from. I used cappocola, mustard seed salami and a hot picante salami for the meat. The cheeses were sharp cheddar, asiago and greyere. The secret to cheeses is to get a semi soft one, a sharp one and something in between. The oils I used were a basil oil, olive oil, red wine vinegar and a really good aged balsamic. Here's a pic of the one I just made.

They liked it so much that a new family tradition has been born. I really think that if I don't make one of these from now on for Thanksgiving snack there will be a revolt.

Now I have about 30 minutes till its time to get the turkey in the oven. My Thanksgiving dinner is very simple...Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, green bean casserole, gravy and cranberry sauce, nothing fancy. The best part of making this dinner is that Meagan and I have been doing it for so long together we can whip it out in a flash, we have such symmetry in the kitchen we don't even have to talk about the cooking. The hardest part of the meal is making my family wait till we are all seated before they start digging in.

And for the first time I made a homemade pie! I was nervous, but the friends who live in my IPad helped me thru it and it looks great!

Here's wishing you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving!

A realization

As you know we lost my Mother-in-law to cancer on June 28th. When we were going thru the stuff in her house I was looking for this cross stitch picture I had made for her about 26 years ago. Today I got the picture in the mail. My Sister-in-law found it and remembered that I wanted it. Here's the cross stitch and the poem that it says.

Our Mother

You are the Mother I received
the day I wed your son.
And I just want to thank you, Mom
for the things that you have done.
You have given me a gracious man
with whom I share my life.
You are his lovely Mother and
I his lucky Wife.
You used to pat his little head,
and now I hold his hand.
You raised in love a little boy
then gave to me a man.

When Mom was in the hospital towards the end of her life, there were 2 days that she was very lucid and was able to chat with each of us. It was during this time that I thanked her for raising a wonderful man. Since then I have put a lot of thought into that conversation and have decided that I want to be that kind of Mother-in-law. The kind that raised good men that make great husbands and Dads. Then 2 days ago I called Bryan, my oldest who is 23, when he was on a date. He very nicely asked if he could call me back tomorrow (which he did) and then told me he loved me. This meant a lot to me and I hope the girl he was on a date with recognized what a wonderful man he is. They say that boys that treat their Moms with respect make the best husbands. As a Mom that was a very proud moment for me.

Here's my Fall Project...

I'm super excited today to be part of the Accuquilt Fall Blog Hop! I'm part of the Quilters With Modern Tools group and guess what? As of yesterday I became a quilter with 2 modern tools! You'll have to wait and see which one I just got :)

The theme for this blog hop is Fall and the only specific instruction we received was that it had to be made with something cut with our Accuquilt Go! or Baby Go! You know me I have to be different so I started thinking. I didn't have to think to much because I know October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and since October is in the Fall and I had just gotten the Accuquilt Go! Ribbon die it was a perfect fit.

I was lucky enough to find some great Breast Cancer fabric for this project, even though I had no idea what this project was until this past Sunday. I was very torn about what to make. First I was going to make a zipper bag, but I didn't have enough fusible fleece and didn't want to go to any store so scratch that idea. Then I decided on a mug rug.

Since I knew I needed a few applique ribbons cut out with my Go! I started there. I used Steam-A-Seam 2 on the back of the ribbon fabric. Its so easy to use, just place the part without the paper on the back of your fabric and press for 10 seconds. Then I simply used the Go! the same way as I usually would and it came out perfect.

That's when inspiration hit me. I decided to make a frame out of fabric and put the ribons in the center. Here's what I came up with for the ribbon layout. Actually I had wanted to use 3 ribbons to signify Mind, Body and Spirit, but that didn't work.

The frame part of the mug rug came together in my mind pretty easy. I fussy cut the words used for the inside frame. Here's a word at the top that has significant meaning to me. My Mother-in-law had breast cancer 9 years ago and was in remission for 8 years before she was diagnosed with lung cancer. We lost her 3 months ago tomorrow (June 28, 2011). Here's one of my favorite pics from June 2010 of my Hub's and his Mom.

Here's my finished project. You can't tell from this pic but I used a curly stitch along the inside of the frame. It was fun doing something different than a straight stitch. It's a bit big to be a mug rug so it ended up being a mini quilt.

Here's a close look at the center of the ribbons. I'm not sure if you can tell but theres a butterfly stitched by machine in the center and the center of the 2 ribbons too. My Mother-in-law loved butterflies.

I hope you like my Fall project. I havent decided what to do with this mini quilt yet, for now its staying with me, but I might donate it at some point to help raise funds for the Susan G Komen Association.

Here's the full list for the blog hop. Be sure to visit everyones blog and tell them Sha sent you!

One Down, Two To Go!

Here's one of my favorite pics of my kids (from left to right; Meagan, Bryan and Tyler) . It was taken many years ago at Disney World in Florida. As you can see they had just visited with a balloon artist. What makes me love this pic is that they all are so happy. Everytime I see this pic it gives me the warm fuzzies!

Fast forward to the present day. Here's my kids now, well a few years ago when Tyler (my baby) graduated from High School (from left to right; Tyler, Meagan and Bryan). They are all doing their college hand signs, but we really don't know what the hand sign for a blue jay is so he improvised. This is another one of favorite pics for the same reason, seeing them happy makes me happy and puts a smile on my face. I don't know about you, but my world is all about being happy and making those I love happy too.

One of the best things to happen lately is that Bryan graduated college, with a masters in molecular pathology! He is now out on his own and totally off the payroll! (Yes I used 2 exclamation points). Did you hear that door creaking a bit? Thats the bank of Daddy closing its door slowly since one of the kids account with that specific bank is now closed. But the best thing as a Mom is seeing the kids grow into these wonderful young adults.

Back to the pic...who can guess what school each of my kids goes to just by their hand signs? To me this hand sign thing is new. I was the flaming arrows in high school (Go Sachem!) and don't remember any kind of sign we made and in college we were the screaming eagles (Go SUNY Brockport), again I don't remember any signs for that. Although I bet there is one now. Do you remember your schools signs? I'd love to know if I'm the only one who can't remember those things :) Of course I might be since its my 30th high school reunion this weekend.
