GREAT WOMEN OF OUR TIME (PART 2)...

Rihanna

Speaks for itself, doesn't it?

GREAT WOMEN OF OUR TIME (PART 1)...

What can I say? VENUS - in Roman mythology the goddess of love; in the 21st Century the well-fit burd from FIREBALL XL5 that lucky pilot STEVE ZODIAC is probably...well, you know. Yeah, probably. I don't think I like Steve any more, but I have to admire his taste. Although, for all I know, she might have had a thing for PROFESSOR MATTHEW MATTIC - but that's just SICK! (Venus - h'mm. Well, I would - wouldn't you?)

FROM THE '30s TO THE '70s...

Art by Wayne Boring (main figure) & Joe Shuster

A book I absolutely loved when it first came out was SUPERMAN - FROM THE '30s TO THE '70s, published in the UK by SPRING BOOKS. (CROWN BOOKS in the US.) I first saw it in W. & R. HOLMES, a bookshop, stationers, toyshop, artstore and newsagents back around October 1972, alongside its companion volume, BATMAN - FROM THE '30s TO THE '70s. (Okay, they had the apostrophes in the wrong place, but hey - nobody's perfect.)

For 'Atomic Comics' read 'Action Comics'

These books were the bees' knees, being over an inch thick and containing what was purported to be the milestone adventures of DC COMICS' two premier heroes, SUPERMAN and BATMAN. I bought the Superman volume and pored over its contents, absorbing every word of E. NELSON BRIDWELL's informative and well-written introduction. Curiously, the back cover claimed that ol' Supes' first appearance was in ATOMIC COMICS, whereas, as we all know, it was actually ACTION COMICS that contained that momentous four-colour tale.

Art by Carmine Infantino & Murphy Anderson

I didn't obtain the Batman volume 'til its second printing in 1979 (although I now have first and second editions of both volumes) and this is also a highly commendable publication. There were also WONDER WOMAN and CAPTAIN MARVEL (SHAZAM) volumes, but I've never seen the Wonder Woman one - although I did manage to get a hardback American edition (complete with dustjacket) of Captain Marvel from a jumble sale in about 1985.

Only £1.25 - wotta bargain

The one drawback to the Batman book is that Batman's first appearance from DETECTIVE COMICS #'27 (and one or two other tales, I suspect) is a recreated version and not the original. The pages were taken from an anniversary presentation of the tale from an issue of Detective Comics in the '60s and has been reprinted several times - even in the deluxe hardcover ARCHIVE EDITIONS of a few years ago. The good news is that proofs from the original 1939 version were used in the MILLENIUM EDITION of Detective Comics #27 ten years ago, so that's the one collectors should look out for. (I'll have to check to see what version was used in the oversized Treasury Edition from the '70s.)

These are two books well worth having 'though, and shouldn't be too difficult to obtain on ebay. Interestingly, there was an updated version of the Superman volume, entitled SUPERMAN - FROM THE '30s TO THE '80s, and that is also worth seeking out.

FOOTNOTE: The second printings of these books (in 1979) were not quite as thick as the earlier editions, but this was merely due to being printed on slightly thinner paper - the page count and contents were not reduced in any way.

ABSOLUTELY THE SEXIEST WOMAN ALIVE...

...is the woman I want to marry. However, while I'm waiting for her to notice I even exist, let's travel back in time and space to a winter's evening in Glasgow in 1967 or '68. The precise location is under Stockwell bridge (now gone) in Stockwell Street, where I'm looking in the window of a shop at the cover of a BATMAN colouring book which was simply crying out to me. The shop was closed, so I pleaded with my mother to promise to buy it for me at a later date for my then fast-approaching birthday. She did, but I have no idea whether she obtained the book from another source or had to go back to that particular shop to obtain it.

I remember taking it to school and colouring it in during the breaks, and letting ROSS CAMPBELL colour one of the pages in return for allowing me to do the same in his different Batman colouring book. His book may well have been the other one featured here - but then again, may well not have been - so don't go betting your house on the matter.

Ah, happy hours of innocent fun, to be had from the mere application of some coloured pencils or wax crayons - why aren't kids today so easily pleased?

Global Warming, Political Science, and Apocalypse Not Now

-
Roanoke Times, 11-29-10, Pg 10: Debating climate change in the Roanoke Times blog.
What a refreshing concept; a debate about climate change. Apparently there now are OK real people who are skeptics. Unfortunately the debate is among ordinary folks and not between the state-of-the-art skeptics vs. alarmists. The alarmists have steadfastly refused open and fair debate in any forum, any time or any place. They wear a mantra of “consensus” as their excuse for politically convenient predetermined conclusions and hide from direct one-on-one professional debate.
-
Pg 6: Delegates will strive for progress on climate deal to curb climate change.
Perhaps it’s difficult to define a “deal” that will address the natural variations in the earth’s natural processes including: climate change, temperature variations, el ninos and la ninas, hurricanes, rising and falling tides, and rising and setting sunsets. To say nothing about those darn shifting, drifting and heaving tectonic plates. Apparently we'll have a treaty to contain them next year.
-
Pg 10: Editorial: Climate change debunker debunked.
A focused personal attack upon a global warming skeptic professor with lots of accusations presented as proven facts. On second read: the Professor’s facts aren’t questioned – just his sources and credits. What a change from the editorial approach to the ClimateGate, GlacierGate, OzoneGate, BinLadenGate, AfricaGate, DutchGate, IndiaGate scandals which were immediately shrugged off as much to do about little or nothing and quickly swept under the consensus-rug.
http://roanokeslant.blogspot.com/2010/02/obama-climategates-and-snow-jobs.html
-
For example: not found in the RT was any mention of distinguished Professor Hal Lewis’ Letter: “My Resignation From The American Physical Society”. Lewis’ resignation was a significant scientific community event acknowledged by both skeptics and alarmists but alas not by the RT Editors who diligently carry the Gore-Candle as their view of news.
http://roanokeslant.blogspot.com/2010/10/distinguished-scientist-hal-lewis.html
-
Also not found in the RT is an Editorial explaining where the apocalyptic hurricanes are that were forecast for this year by the alarmist Apocalypse-Now Goreites!
The following is offered for their enlightenment:
http://www.wtok.com/home/headlines/US_Escapes_Major_Hurricanes_in_2010__110996004.html

U.S. Escapes Major Hurricanes in 2010 (none hit US mainland again!)
A busy Atlantic hurricane season ends Tuesday. The U.S. has been spared any major storms for a fifth straight year. Posted: 3:26 PM Nov 29, 2010; Reporter: The Associated Press; Hurricane Wilma in 2005 was the last major hurricane of Category 3 or stronger to hit the U.S. The U.S. has never before gone more than five consecutive years without a major hurricane.
-
(The alarmists and the RT Editors will inform us that the next one to hit will be caused by carbon-driven climate change and it's your fault!)

WikiLeaks, Obama, Ellsburg and The Left WingNuts

-
The left-wing liberal-progressive world community was elated when Daniel Ellsburg released thousands of pages of classified papers about the Viet Nam war to the New York Times in 1971. “What a wonderful and patriotic act” sung the liberal-choir!
http://www.u-s-history.com/pages/h1871.html
-
Fast forward to 2010 and the WikiLeaks Obama and Hillary Clinton State Department publications and now it’s a whole new ball game.
How dare these nasty people release material that makes Obama, Hillary and their lackeys look like the key-stone cops!
-
Holden , Obama’s adjutant general who wants to play nice with terrorists who kill Americans, is now investigating what he normally would declare as a 1st Amendment and Free Press right. But not now! Making Obama look incredibly dull before the entire world (who are supposed to love him) is an act of treason at best.
-
The hypocrisy of Obama, his pathetic team and the so called major media and press is unsurpassed in US history.

Nativity

Hello!  Is everyone feeling nourished.  The joy of loved ones, laughter and
favorite family foods all combine to make a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.
Caitlin shared with us the Target "Black Friday tips" video series with us.  Very Funny.

The Christmas spirit kicks into high gear for me Thanksgiving weekend.
So to keep busy at home ~ A Nativity was made!
PB260039good

"Sweet Baby Jesus" is a nice name.  All of the pieces are hand painted in soft
vintage  shades and a tiered table is made  and fine silver glitter is added.
This is designed by me for You!  Do stop by my Etsy Shop, Oh Merci :)
I am helping Caitlin again but I do want to get a few pretty necklaces made for you also!

Oh, visions of sugar plums danced in my head just now... thinking of the marshmallow brownie
short cut desert I  made for the chocolate lovers on Thanksgiving Day.
I will make some this week and take a photo and give you the steps to quick chocolate delight!
I hope you like my new design!

Mary

All hounds on deck! A hunting we will go!

I was super excited when Mom told me about the Norfolk Hunt Club's Thanksgiving Day hunt. I had visions of me leaping over fences, scrambling through ditches and generally having a wild time. The thrill of the chase! The lure of the scent!

Alas, it was not to be. Though I did snag some dark turkey meat, the only hunting I did was for scraps near the oven while Mom was cooking. Then, my people left me savoring the tantalizing smell of meat while they hoofed it out to watch the hunt.

Well, I could have told them all about it. After all, in my six months in South Carolina, I had plenty of experience. At the end of the day, while country life has its charms, and I wouldn't mind sharing a sleeping space with my canine kin, a kennel just can't compare with a warm blanket. Or a bed all to oneself. Or turkey with gravy.

RED-HOT NAKED WOMEN...

...would be nice - but here's a pic of SILVER SURFER #4 instead. (Well, a fella has to do something to get your attention!)

Seeing as you're here 'though, take the time to admire this fantastic piece of artwork by BIG JOHN BUSCEMA. They sure don't make artists like that anymore!

THE POWER OF COLOUR (PART 2)...

Pencils by Jack Kirby

Following on from the previous post, here's a few more examples of what a difference colour (or, to be more precise, the choice of colour) can make to a printed page. The example on the left is the original JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #83 as it appeared back in 1962. Compare it with the brighter, recoloured version from the first printing of MARVEL MASTERWORKS Vol. 18, 1991/'92. (Note: A superior version, more faithful to the original, appears in the recent softcover edition of THOR MASTERWORKS.)

Inks by Joe Sinnott

Now compare both of them to the magnificent TOM CHU coloured presentation (below), reproduced in the TALES OF ASGARD hardcover volume, which also reprints the origin tale from J.I.M. #83. (Unfortunately, despite the superb colouring, the artwork has been retouched in places, having been restored from the reprint in THOR #158. For a more faithful reprint of this classic story, see the softcover MASTERWORKS edition, referred to above.)

THE POWER OF COLOUR (PART 1)...

Art by Walter Simonson

What a difference colour makes. Not convinced? Take a look at these basic, flat-coloured examples of JACK KIRBY & VINCE COLLETTA THOR stories from the TALES OF ASGARD 1984 special (Vol. 2, No.1). Alongside are the newly coloured, multi-hued MATT MILLA pages from the deluxe, hardcover edition of the same tales. (First available as a 6-part mini-series.) The pages are given a whole new dimension, enabling them to go toe-to-toe with many contemporary offerings available in comics shops today.

Not wishing to labour the comparison, but the difference is similar to that of an old POPEYE or BETTY BOOP cartoon compared to the almost 3D effect of the animation in WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? Last year, I picked up the computer-coloured reprint of MARVEL COMICS #1 and the effect was the same. The pages seem to have become imbued with a vitality lacking in their original printing and don't appear quite as dated in contrast to more modern presentations.

A while ago, the British magazine AVENGERS UNITED reprinted the Tales of Asgard series in its original form, and it was generally met with an indifferent, sometimes even hostile reaction. It seems that kids of today have been spoiled by the photo-realistic, more complex coloured art in contemporary stories, and couldn't quite take to the four-coloured classics of yesterday. I'm pretty sure that, had MARVEL/PANINI been able to present the Matt Milla versions (which hadn't yet been done), the reaction would have been more positive.

I think it can only be a matter of time before Marvel start colouring ALL their stories from yesteryear in this same fashion and then re-presenting them as "definitive versions" in deluxe, hardcovered volumes. As I said, it certainly gives them a whole new dimension and might help them to appeal to younger readers not yet steeped in the company's glorious history who seem to have an aversion to older material. (Hard as it is to believe.)

The complete TALES OF ASGARD is available from all good comic shops now. (And has been for some time.) And here, for the purists, is the cover of the original 1968 T.O.A. special (Vol.1, No.1).

Happy Thanks-giveaway!

I wanted to share a little something this Thanksgiving!
So I'm having a giveaway today over at my crafting blog The Lovely Lemon!
Head on over for your chance to be the lucky winner of a festive fall coffee cup sleeve!
Happy Thanksgiving!

Grateful, or thankful? What's the difference?

So, I'm thinking of things I'm thankful for, this being Thanksgiving and all, and as I'm toting up all that's terrific in my life, I start wondering: am I thankful, or am I grateful?

For example, am I thankful for the luxurious new Italian wool throw that my cugini sent, or am I grateful that they left so I can have my room back? Furthermore, did Mom feel embarrassed that I had chewed holes through the old throw?

I will elucidate. The definitions, then:
1. grateful: feeling or showing an appreciation of kindness. So I would be grateful for a new wool throw to wrap 'round my tired self. How terribly kind of them to think of me.
2. thankful: pleased and relieved (no kidding!) Obviously, I'm thankful that I have my room back.
And Mom will be embarrassed once my dear cugini see just how grateful, and thankful, I am. Cozy, too.

Happy Thanksgiving!

THE UNSEEN DESPERATE DAN...

Written, pencilled, inked, lettered and coloured by Kid Robson

Unseen because I've only just drawn it. One or two people who responded to a couple of my previous posts (and elsewhere) said that I should have a go at drawing DESPERATE DAN from the long-running DANDY comic if I wasn't too keen on the current incarnation of DD.

So, first chance I got, I DID. What you're looking at is a hand-coloured, A4 photocopy, the result of some old acrylic inks I've had lying about for 10 years. I didn't take the time to properly erase the pencil lines from the original before I got the page photocopied, so some are still in evidence. When I have more time, I'll "tidy up" the colours a bit.

Black and white A4 copy from original artwork

I've deliberately avoided going for the DUDLEY D. WATKINS look, preferring instead to go for a slightly more "cartoonish" appearance - hence my version of AUNT AGGIE looking nothing like the traditional one. It should go without saying that the "devil effect" in frame 6 is merely symbolic and not to be taken literally.

Done merely for my own amusement, the copyright of DESPERATE DAN remains the property of D.C. THOMSON & Co., Ltd. Dan and all his comic chums can be seen every week in THE DANDY for a mere £1.50 - on sale every Wednesday.

Cute little Pony Party by Rachel Denbow!

By Golly! She's done it again! Rachel Denbow has got the best taste! Her style is so vintage and whimsical....you can see that from the way she dresses, in her home furnishings, and even in her party planning!
I give you....the Pony Party!

She made this sweet little bib out of a vintage doliy for the sweet little birthday girl, her daughter Ruby. (who turned two!)
Mother and daughter at the beautiful vintage pony party!
Oh I LOVE these pretty felt ribbons! So inspiring, I think I'll make a few myself!

Such a simple food table setup, but the colors are lovely and I love the horses. (which were Rachel's when she was little) I love that she was able to use something that she had herself as a young girl for her daughter's party!

Here's the beautiful bib post-party! A little worse for the wear but it did it's job!
The cupcakes did look delicious, and I think Ruby liked them too!

The Obama Arrogance Infects Our Government

King Obama and his court jesters continue to treat the American people with total arrogance and condescension.
-
This week his so called homeland security chief, Janet Napolitano, told the American people
“if you don’t want us to touch your genitals, then don’t fly!”
This from one of the dullest cabinet officers to ever serve any President.
-
Apparently the American people’s distain for Obama’s policies and his associates and the recent election results are totally foreign to these simpletons.
-
Are Michelle and Hillary being felt-up by these TSA men who can’t get a real job?
Obviously NOT! But it’s OK for you and me; we’re just minions and faceless clones in the crowd.
-
The Apple advertisement video showing the enslaved person throwing a hammer through the movie screen, in a stark reference to 1984, is certainly appropriate now for this administration and it’s lackeys.

Psyched To Get Miked @ Atomic Books

Zinesters Mike White and Mike Faloon sign and read new works
Atomic Books, Hampden, Friday, November 19, 2010

Friday, November 19th was the "Night of Two Mikes" at Hampden's Atomic Books, where owners Benn Ray and Rachel Whang doubled down on the literary-finds-for-mutated-minds on offer by hosting two zinesters-turned-authors reading from their works. Young people today sometimes forget that before the Internet made self-publishing and social networking pandemic, "zines" (along with comics and public access TV) were one of the few outlets for underground, alternative media in the early '90s - and the two Mikes were diehard pioneers of the medium.

Mike White was in town to read from and sign copies of Impossibly Funky: A Cashiers du Cinemart Collection, a collection of the best writings (and "13.2% all new stuff!") from his movie fanzine Cashiers du Cinemart (1994-present). (Besides main author Mike White, Impossibly Funky also collects articles by contributors Leon Chase, Chris Cummins, Skizz Cyzyk, Andrew Grant, Clifton Howard, Rich Osmond, Mike Thompson, and Andrea White.) Like White, Mike Faloon is a fellow zine publisher (Zisk, Go Metric), not to mention the drummer of the pop-punk band Egghead (1992-1998, 2010), but on this night he was reading from his short story fiction collection The Hanging Gardens of Split Rock.

Mike Faloon opened the festivities and proved to be a surprisingly talented orator, punching his copy with the confidence and natural cadence of a news anchor; he could easily switch careers from public school teacher to audiobook narrator. Mike White then delighted the audience by reading a hilarious "day-in-the-life of a movie theater employee" essay, one of the first things he wrote for Cashiers du Cinemart and a stellar reminder of why "workplace zines" are so popular - everybody can relate to work foibles and follies, especially jobs that involve dealing with crazy or irksome customers; White, who graciously plugged the comics art of Impossibly Funky's cover co-illustrator Jim Rugg (Afrodesiac, Street Angel, The Plain Janes), also revealed his Midwestern roots when he referred to sodas as "pop."

Mike Faloon is one Smooth Operator narrator

As an added treat, Mike White's wife Andrea presented him with a beautifully detailed, locally baked Ace of Cakes movie theater cake. "Impossibly Funky" was playing at this cake theater, with an outside crowd peopled by the very B-movie characters celebrated in the pages of Cashiers du Cinemart over the years. But fans couldn't partake of it until the following evening's "MicroCineFest Reunion Screening" at Station North's Windup Space, which the two Mikes also attended (and where Mike White's Who Do You Think You're Fooling? was screened).

Ace of Cakes's "Impossibly Funky" was the icing on the cake

Mike White: "I can have my cake and read it too!"

"Hmmm, can't wait to eat that marquee tomorrow night!"

It was fitting that the two Mikes made a pit stop in Baltimore to promote their books, as both authors, while not from Baltimore, have strong ties to the city's film and music scene - which it would not be a stretch to call Six Degrees of Skizz Cyzyk. Both Mikes have served as judges on Skizz's MicroCineFest film jury and "Mike the White" has screened film shorts at MicroCineFest (including Who Do You Think Your Fooling?, his infamous expose of Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs), while "Mike the Faloon" has played with Egghead at the Mansion Theater, Skizz's former home and screening/concert center. A number of Baltimore-based musicians and film geeks have also written for Cashiers du Cinemart, including Skizz and his sometime musical partner Scott Wallace Brown (Mink Stole & Her Wonderful Band, The Awkward Sounds of Scott & Skizz, The Bowlermen). Even local public access show Atomic TV popped up in CdC #13 in a "Zines of the Airwaves" review by Terry Gilmer (God's Angry Man).

As a result, the audience teemed with local musicians and filmmakers - Craig Smith (Psychedelic Glue-Sniffing Hillbillies), Degenerettes Rahne Alexander and Kristen Anchor, Jennifers and Garage Sale guitarist John Irvine, Joe Tropea (co-director of the documentary Hit and Stay and former Jennifers bassist), Dave Cawley (Garage Sale bass player, Urbanite fashion model, and erstwhile Go Metric contributing writer), Atomic TV's Tom Warner and Scott Huffines - who had either collaborated with the two Mikes or been influenced by their work. Naturally, Skizz was also there - Skizz Cyzyk, the Skizz with two Z's (not to be confused with Baltimore's other Skizzer, music producer honcho Skiz Fernandez).

Craig Smith drools over the "Impossibly Funky" cake (and book) whilst authors Faloon and White savor his good taste

Jim Hollenbaugh, curator of the Moviate Harrisburg cult film series, even drove down from Pennsylvania to see the Mikes and, of course, catch up on his Atomic Books shopping. Hollenbaugh also was in town to go to dinner with his pals Scott Huffines (Atomic TV, Baltimore Or Less) and John Waters.

Scott Huffines (Atomic TV, Baltimore Or Less) and Jim Hollenbaugh (Jim is holding up the copy of Katharine Gates' "Deviant Desires" he grabbed for an Xmas gift at Atomic Books)

Tom Warner (Atomic TV, Baltimore Or Less) and Jim Hollenbaugh

On the way out of Atomic Books, Japanese giant monster fan Dave Cawley was overjoyed to spot a car with a Michigan vanity plate proclaiming "GAMERA." Naturally, it belonged to none other than that purveyor of fine, eclectic taste, Mike White!

"I'm Dave Cawley and I approve this license plate!"
